Nkhoma hospital dates back to the 1890s and falls under the Church of Central Africa Presibeterian Church. It is one of the largest referral hospitals in the Lilongwe district of the central region of Malawi. Situated on the border of Lilongwe district, the capital city of Malawi, and Dedza district, Nkhoma hospital has a catchment area of close to 500,000 people. The hospital provides health services at hospital level and also community level. At community level, several services are offered such as Home Based Care, community intervations in safemotherhood issues, mobile clinics, malaria control, outreach/mobile clinics, etc. The hospital has a capacity of 220 beds.
The core departments of the hospital are: administration, finance, Public health, Nursing, clinical, transport, human resource, information and communication technology, maintenance and others.
The hospital has well established policies on gender equality issues, HIV/AIDS, staff welfare, disciplenary issues, chaplaincy, staff training and capacity building. Each of these areas has a special committee with representation from all departments looking into specific issues with respect to their speciality.
Financial audits are done on regular basis by external auditors and reports made available to responsible offices. A well established electronic health information system has been running for two years now and it covers all areas of patient management, billing, stock management and others.
